While 88th Avenue South will reopen on Wednesday, June 26, in Kent, drivers on that same day will find South 218th Street closed between 93rd Avenue South and 94th Place South until October for construction work, according to city Public Works officials.

The work is part of the city’s South 224th extension project that includes the widening of 88th Avenue South/South 218th Street to a three-lane road from South 222nd Street to 94th Place South. The road project extends the South 228th corridor from the new bridge being completed over Highway 167 up the hill.

City officials closed 88th Avenue South as part of the same 224th extension.

The $8.4 million contract will include a new culvert over Garrison Creek along South 218th Street; new curb, sidewalk, planter strip and widened shoulder; overhead utilities moved underground; new storm drainage, treatment and detention facility; wetland mitigation; and water system improvements.

Drivers will need to use South 208th Street and James Street as detour routes. Work is expected to be completed in October.

Kent has planned for the 228th/224th corridor for decades. With the growth of Kent, city leaders wanted another alternative to move traffic between the West Hill, Valley and East Hill.
