Kent Police want to remind residents that fireworks are illegal in the city.
The City Council in 2016 adopted a measure that prohibits the sale, discharge and possession of fireworks.
“We realize that with the cancellation of Fourth of July Splash (fireworks show at Lake Meridian Park), you may be tempted to light a few off this year,” according to the police statement. “Please resist, be safe and find other ways to make a memorable celebration with your families.”
Police also said that due to the unprecedented heat and lack of rain, there is also greater risk of brush fires caused by fireworks.
The council voted for the ban in part because Kent voters (62 percent) approved a ban in a November 2015 advisory vote to the council. Numerous complaints from residents to the council about fireworks going off in their neighborhoods before, during and after the Fourth of July caused the council to consider a ban and ask for the advisory vote.
Report violations
Residents can report fireworks violations by calling the police department non-emergency number at 253-852-2121. Residents should not call 911 for fireworks unless there is an immediate safety concern.
