Kent Police arrested a 16-year-old Kent boy for investigation of vehicular assault and theft of a motor vehicle after he reportedly crashed the car into two other vehicles, injuring himself and three other people, two of them critically.
Officers responded at about 9:08 p.m. Monday, June 17 to the 12900 block of SE Kent-Kangley Road on the East Hill to search for a recently stolen vehicle, according to a Tuesday, June 18 Kent Police news release.
The vehicle owner called 911 to report two suspects had taken her blue Chrysler PT Cruiser after posing as prospective buyers, according to police. An officer located the vehicle traveling westbound on SE 256th Street near 132nd Avenue SE and attempted a traffic stop, but the PT Cruiser accelerated away.
Due to heavy vehicle traffic in the area, the officer did not pursue the vehicle and shut down his emergency vehicle equipment near SE 256th Street and 124th Avenue SE, according to police.
A few minutes later, patrol units discovered the stolen vehicle flipped upside down at the intersection of SE 256th Street and 116th Avenue SE.
The PT Cruiser had collided with two other vehicles, an Audi Q5 and a Toyota Corolla, causing significant damage to both. Medical personnel were immediately requested to the scene. The occupants of the Audi had no major injuries at the time of the report.
A 47-year-old Kent man, the driver of the Corolla, had multiple broken bones. He was treated at the scene by Puget Sound Fire personnel and transported to a local hospital, according to police. His passenger, an 18-year-old Kent woman, was significantly injured and transported in critical condition to a local hospital.
Officers saw the driver of the PT Cruiser climbing out of the stolen vehicle and he was immediately detained. Although he was able to exit the upturned vehicle on his own, his injuries were significant enough that he was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to police.
Witnesses reportedly positively identified the teen as the suspect who had taken the vehicle. The second suspect, an unknown aged teen or young adult male, was trapped inside the PT Cruiser, and required help from fire personnel to extract him from the car, according to police. Due to the extent of his injuries, he was immediately transported in critical condition to a local hospital before he was identified. His current condition is unknown, according to police.
