Letter carriers set May 8 food drive; Kent participates

The annual national food drive is May 8 by the National Association of Letter Carriers. Postal customers can leave bags or boxes of non-perishable donations on May 8 next to their mailbox for carriers to pick up. Letter carriers will deliver a bag to customer's mailboxes during the first week of May.

The financial woes for the ShoWare Center in Kent continued in the first three months of this year. "We are $84,000 in the hole," said Patrick McClusky, ShoWare finance director, at a Thursday meeting of the Public Facilities District board.

Kentridge High dance squad is tops in state

The 2010 season turned out to be a golden one for the Kentridge Chatelaines. The dance team, at 52-members strong, took first and second place in the show and kick categories, respectively, at the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association 4A Dance/Drill Championships in March. In addition to that, the team walked away with the winner's trophy as the academic champions of the meet, with a cumulative grade point average of 3.54.

The count of ballots through May 4 shows voters in Kent, King County Fire District 37 and Covington are overwhelming approving Proposition No. 1 to form a regional fire authority that would merge the Kent Fire Department and Fire District 37.

Everett man sentenced for human trafficking in connection with Kent prostitution case

A U.S. District Court judge April 30 in Seattle sentenced a 28-year-old Everett man to six years, five months in prison for human trafficking in connection with forcing a woman to work as prostitute in 2007 and 2008 along Pacific Highway South in Kent and Des Moines.

Waste Management, union reach tentative agreement

Waste Management and Teamsters Local 174 negotiators reached a tentative agreement Tuesday night on a new five-year contract for garbage haulers. Negotiators met for 15 hours on Monday and continued bargaining talks on Tuesday before reaching agreement on a new contract. A federal mediator assisted with the talks.

Voters approving formation of new regional fire authority in Kent

Voters in Kent, King County Fire District 37 and Covington are overwhelming approving Proposition No. 1 to form a regional fire authority that would merge the Kent Fire Department and Fire District 37. After the first count of ballots Tuesday night, Proposition No. 1 had received 10,859 (72.96 percent) yes votes and 4,025 (27.04 percent) no votes, according to the King County Elections officials. Ballots had to be postmarked by April 27 to count in the election.

Contract talks for garbage haulers resumed Tuesday between Waste Management and Teamsters Local 174 negotiators after a 15-hour bargaining session on Monday. The session lasted until after 1 a.m. Tuesday, said Susan Robinson, director of public sector services for Waste Management, in an e-mail Tuesday to Kent city officials.
