Dogs rejoice: Kent’s first off-leash dog park opens Oct. 23

The City of Kent is getting its first off-leash dog park. Located on East Hill between Morrill Meadows and East Hill Parks on Southeast 248th Street, the 3-acre site will have its Grand Opening 1 p.m. Oct. 23. In place of a traditional ribbon-cutting, Mayor Suzette Cooke will untie a string of colorful doggie bandanas to “unleash” the park and let the dogs take it over.

Good news: Proposed Kent city budget would add new employees, start reserve fund

Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke presented a 2011 proposed budget to the City Council Tuesday that calls for hiring 17 new employees as well as establishing reserve funds of $2 million to help fight Green River flooding and cover lost tax revenues if two state liquor initiatives are approved by voters.

A 20-year-old Kent man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a charge of first-degree animal cruelty for reportedly starving a puppy to death last year in his abandoned apartment.

Kent Predators hire new Indoor Football League coach after Billings team folds

The Kent Predators of the professional Indoor Football League have hired Heron O'Neal, the former Billings Outlaws coach, as their new coach for the 2011 season. O'Neal became available after the Billings team folded last week. O'Neal coached the Outlaws to the 2009 and 2010 Indoor Football League titles. In five years at Billings, O'Neal had a 67-17 record and won three league titles.

Kent Police respond to fight among Lingerie Football League fans

Extra police officers were called to help break up a fight among several Lingerie Football League fans after one man reportedly yelled a racial slur at another man during the Oct. 8 game at the ShoWare Center in Kent. Kent Police officers on duty at the women's game between the Seattle Mist and the Chicago Bliss asked for additional units at about 10 p.m. Oct. 8 because of problems with "intoxicated subjects and fights," according to the police report. The game started at about 9 p.m.

Des Moines man sentenced to prison for lying to grand jury about Seattle strip-club case

A 46-year-old Des Moines man was sentenced Oct. 8 by a U.S. District Court judge to 45 days in prison, two years of supervised released and a $30,000 fine for lying to a federal grand jury. John Kenneth Arnold pleaded guilty in May of lying to the grand jury during the investigation of criminal racketeering at the Frank Colacurcio Sr. owned strip clubs in Seattle, Everett and Tacoma.

Kent Police are looking for a dull black mid-1990s Honda Civic that a witness recently spotted in the area of several vehicle break-ins. The car is a two-door hatchback with three spoke wheels and one stock wheel, according to a Sept. 30 Kent Police e-mail.

Bring junk to Kent recycling event

It is time for Kent residents to clear away junk from their homes and take it to the fall recycling event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 16 at Russell Road Park, 24400 Russell Road. Residents can bring items not easily recycled at the curb, including appliances, batteries, propane tanks, toilets, electronics (other than computers and televisions), tires, concrete, brick and up to three file boxes of documents to be shredded. Mattresses also will be collected for the first time at the event.

LeMieux wrote "Breakfast at Sally's," which outlines his life when he was homeless in Bremerton and often ate meals at the Salvation Army.
