The number of homicides in Kent so far this year is up to nine after a fatal shooting of a 28-year-old man along Alder Lane near the Central Avenue Pub.
Antwon D. Nelson died of a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death is homicide, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. Nelson was shot on June 20 and died June 21.
Nelson is from St. Louis, Missouri, according to Kent Police. No arrests have been made and police do not know whether Nelson and the shooter knew each other.
It was reported at about 1:56 a.m. that a man had been shot in the head on Alder Lane and a woman was driving him to the hospital, according to police.
Officers met Nelson and the woman at Valley Medical Center in Renton. Nelson was awake and repeating that he needed help. The woman claimed to have heard the shooting, but when she came outside, she saw Nelson in his own car which was still on Alder Lane, east of the Central Avenue Pub.
The woman said she did not see what preceded the shooting. Officers on scene at Alder Lane located several items of evidence, including multiple shell casings in the roadway.
Paramedics transported Nelson to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle from Valley Medical Center in critical condition. He died the next day.
Police said they do not have any suspect information.
“Our detectives are still conducting their investigation,” said Cmdr. Robert Hollis in a July 1 email.
The killing is the ninth homicide in the first six months of 2021 in Kent. The city had eight homicides in 2020, four in 2019 and seven in 2018.
