A mother and child were able to escape safely during a house fire in the 21600 block of 94th Place South.
The mother called 911 once outside. The first 911 call was at 3 p.m. Thursday. Seven people were displaced by the fire, according to a Kent Regional Fire Authority media release.
When firefighters from the Kent and Renton RFAs arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from one side of the two-story home. It took approximately 10 minutes to fully extinguish the fire. Smoke and heat caused damage throughout the home.
A small, portable space heater caused the fire, investigators said. Firefighters found it tipped over, but it was undetermined whether the device started the fire before or after tipping. The space heater did have a built-in shut off in the event that it was tipped.
There were working smoke alarms and at least one working carbon monoxide alarm.
King County Medic One and the Zone 3 Fire Explorers also responded to the incident.
