Kent Police arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he reportedly slapped his wife in the face during an argument about the woman spending money to buy marijuana rather than paying rent.

The incident occurred at about 12:35 a.m. on Feb. 22 at a house in the 800 block of East Temperance Street, according to the police report.

The wife told officers the couple has a history of domestic violence, including an incident when police arrested her for throwing a clam shell at her husband. But she said this time her husband slapped her in the face and pushed her into a bedroom closet. Officers noted the woman had a red mark on her face.

When police interviewed the husband, he denied slapping his wife. He said she probably slapped herself to get the red marks. The wife told officers they fight often because her husband refuses to get a job and she supports the family with her disability checks.

Obstructing

Police arrested a man for investigation of obstructing an officer and multiple warrants during an incident that started at about 8:58 p.m. on Feb. 23 at Little Caesars, 27020 Pacific Highway S.

Officers chased the man on foot with the help of a K9 unit before catching him along South 272nd Street, according to the police report.

Police received a tip that a man with numerous warrants would be showing up at the restaurant. The man had warrants for escape out of King County, disorderly conduct in Chehalis, obstructing in Marysville, theft in Bellevue and a probation violation in Ellensburg.

Officers saw the man walk out of the pizza store but he took off running when they tried to stop him. The man jumped a fence at an apartment complex before he was spotted running through the LA Fitness parking lot and later walking at a mobile home park.

After police finally caught up the man, officers took the man to the ground and handcuffed him. The man told officers he ran from them because of his numerous warrants.

Assault

Officers arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault and trespassing in connection with a suspicious person report at about 2:09 a.m. on Feb. 22 at the Sunset Motel, 25006 Pacific Highway S.

The motel manager saw a man leaning on cars and trying door handles to motel rooms. The manager asked the man to leave the property but he refused to leave, according to the police report.

The man reportedly lurched at the manager, who took the man to the ground and held him until police arrived. When officers were trying to determine the identity of the man with a mobile fingerprinting device, the man allegedly spit at an officer, which resulted in his arrest for assault.

Malicious mischief

Police arrested a man for investigation of malicious mischief and reckless endangerment after he reportedly punched and broke a handrail on stairs at about 8:05 p.m. on Feb. 20 at a home in the 23600 block of 42nd Place South.

Officers responded to the home on a welfare check after the man’s stepfather called to report the man was drunk, angry and breaking items inside the home, according to the police report.

The man left the home in a vehicle before police arrived, but officers spotted him driving erratically nearby and stopped him eastbound on 42nd Place South.

Police found four broken handrails inside the home.

Theft

Officers arrested a man for investigation of second-degree theft after he allegedly stole more than $1,000 worth of items from a Fred Meyer store, 25250 Pacific Highway S.

A store loss prevention officer watched the man load up clothing, headphones and other items into a backpack and leave the store without paying for the products, according to the police report.

The man admitted to officers he tried to steal the items. He told police he was homeless and needed the items.
