Meeker Middle School in the Kent School District will be open on Thursday, May 29 after problems with a sewer system closed the school on Wednesday morning.

Locker rooms will remain closed until all environmental cleanup and safety inspections have been completed, which is anticipated to take 24 to 48 hours, according to a school district media release.

Meeker is at 12600 S.E. 192nd St., in Renton.

Soos Creek Water and Sewer District fixed the problem. A sewer line running through a nearby park had become clogged causing a sewage back-up into the  school, according to school district spokesman Chris Loftis.

“The water company and clean-up crews are cleaning all impacted surfaces,” Loftis said. “Safety is our number one priority and our environmental safety team will make sure all areas are clean and safe before use.”

Meeker’s track and field meet postponed on Wednesday will take place on Thursday at Kentwood High School.

“Thank you for your patience during today’s schedule disruption and we look forward to seeing all of our students tomorrow,” Loftis said.
