Medical examiner identifies pedestrian struck, killed by pickup along Kent’s Reith Road

Larry Kier, 37, died in collision

A 37-year-old man struck and killed by a pickup truck late Friday night while walking across Reith Road in Kent has been identified as Larry Kier.

Kier died of multiple blunt force injury, according to the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. Kent Police reported that Kier is from Seattle.

Police were dispatched at 10:43 p.m. to a report of a fatal collision involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian in the area of Lake Fenwick Road South and Reith Road, according to a Kent Police news release. Dispatchers received 911 calls that indicated that the pedestrian was in the roadway unconscious and not breathing.

Police officers arrived within two minutes, confirming the man was unconscious and without a pulse. Despite life-saving measures, immediately by police and followed by Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority and King County Medic personnel, Kier was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:57 p.m., police reported.

The driver, a 53-year-old Kent man, remained on the scene following the collision and exhibited signs of impairment. Officers arrested the man for DUI, police reported.

Initial information indicates that Kier was crossing Reith Road, just west of Lake Fenwick Road. The driver was traveling eastbound in his pickup truck on Reith Road and struck the man in the roadway, police said. Kier crossed the roadway just west of the intersection, not in a crosswalk, and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the collision, police said. The location of the collision is on a curve near the base of a steep hill.

Kent Police Cmdr. Robert Hollis said in a Tuesday email that there was nothing new to report about the case as the investigation continues.
