The success of Tacoma singer Vicci Martinez on NBC’s “The Voice” meant she had to cancel a scheduled Thursdays at the Lake free concert in Kent at Lake Meridian Park.
Martinez was lined up to sing Aug. 4 at the city of Kent’s free concert series. But she will be on tour with “The Voice.”
“Unfortunately, our date conflicts with ‘The Voice’ tour dates,” said Ronda Billerbeck, city cultural programs manager in an email. “I have booked her so many times over the years that I know how good she is. We may try to reschedule a date with Vicci sometime during the Spotlight Series schedule.”
The city’s Spotlight Series runs from the fall through spring. That lineup has not yet been announced.
Martinez is a blues and folk singer who has opened or shared the stage with Sting, Annie Lennox, B.B. King, the Doobie Brothers, Etta James, and Jonny Lang. She also plays the guitar and draws strong support from the memory of her father, who passed away five years ago.
The national tour of “The Voice” started July 27 Los Angeles and has stops lined up over the next couple of weeks in Las Vegas, Chicago, Boston, Wallingford, Conn., and New York. She is singing Aug. 4 in Boston.
Eight finalists from the show are on tour. The others include Beverly McClellan, Javier Colon, Dia Frampton, Frenchie Davis, Casey Weston and Xenia. Colon won the competition. Martinez was in the final four.
Cascada de Flores (ÒWaterfall of FlowersÓ) will replace Martinez at the 7 p.m. Aug. 4 concert at Lake Meridian Park, 14800 S.E. 272nd St.
The duo brings the folkloric music of Mexico and Cuba to life, according to the city of Kent website. They blend hypnotic vocals with a dizzying number of traditional instruments.
