Man shot by officer at Federal Way motel

Police say the man charged at the officer and the motel’s manager, then grabbed the manager.

One man was shot by a Federal Way Police officer after reportedly charging at the officer and a motel manager on Tuesday morning.

At about 11 a.m. July 6, officers responded to reports of a disturbance at the Eastwind Motel near the 33200 block of Pacific Highway South in Federal Way, according to Cmdr. Casey Jones of Federal Way Police.

The man fled before police arrived and was not located at the time.

About 40 minutes later, callers reported the man returned to the motel armed with a knife and was breaking windows. An officer arrived and contacted the manager.

Early information shows the man charged at the officer and manager, grabbed the manager and was then shot by the officer, Jones said.

Officers administered aid until medics arrived. The man was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. No one else was injured and a knife was recovered at the scene, Jones said. Police confirmed the suspect’s condition as critical.

The Valley Independent Investigation Team (VIIT) responded to conduct the investigation.

Federal Way officers will have no direct involvement in the investigation, Jones said. VIIT will deliver their case to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review and determination of charges.

In addition to VIIT’s independent investigation, the Federal Way Police Department is conducting an internal, administrative review after the VIIT criminal investigation is complete.

The involved officer will be placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure, Jones said.
