Kent Police arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly kicked an elementary school student in an attempt to take the boy’s satchel as he waited for the morning school bus.
The incident happened the morning of Sept. 30 in the 25600 block of 111th Avenue Southeast on the East Hill, according to the police report.
As the boy waited with other students, the man reportedly approached the boy and asked him if he had a laptop in his satchel bag. The boy told him he did not have a laptop. The man then kicked the boy, who was knocked off balance. The man, who was dressed in burgundy scrubs, then walked away.
The school bus driver saw the incident and called 911. Officers interviewed the boy and the driver about the incident and later took the man into custody.
Police also contacted the parents of the boy to let them know he was not injured.
Escape
Police arrested a man for investigation of third-degree escape after he tried to run from the Kent Municipal Court after a judge ordered him into custody.
The man showed up in court at about 3:45 p.m. Sept. 30 and was ordered into custody for failure to appear earlier for a third-degree theft charge, according to the police report.
After the judge ordered the man to sit down in court until an officer arrived to take him to jail, the man walked out of the courtroom. He then ran out of the building and into a waiting truck driven by a friend.
But police arrived and took the man out of the vehicle. The driver of the truck told officers he had walked out of court when the judge ordered his friend to jail. He added that the man surprised him when he jumped into his vehicle. He told officers he did not want to help the man escape, so he did not drive away.
Drugs
An officer arrested a man for investigation of possession of drug paraphernalia after he reportedly found more than two dozen needles in the man’s pants pockets.
Police stopped the man after he saw him reportedly violently kick a crosswalk button on Sept. 28 in the 25400 block of Pacific Highway South on the West Hill.
The officer talked to the man and also discovered the man had a warrant for a hit-and-run charge, according to the police report.
The officer arrested the man for the warrant charge and then found needles in the man’s pockets during a search.
A total of 19 unused, capped and packaged needles were found as well as six unpackaged, unused, capped needles and one used needle.
The man told police he used the needles to inject heroin.
Pursuit
After a brief chase, police called off the pursuit of a motorcyclist who sped up to 80 mph in a 55 mph speed limit zone at about 4:05 p.m. Sept. 28 along Kent-Des Moines Road, just west of Meeker Street.
The officer initially heard the motorcycle speed past the city maintenance shops in the 5800 block of South 240th Street, according to the police report.
The officer followed the motorcyclist southbound on Russell Road and westbound on Meeker Street before coming up behind him at the intersection of the Kent-Des Moines Road and Meeker Street.
At the intersection, the motorcyclist made a u-turn and started to head eastbound on Kent-Des Moines Road. The officer then activated his emergency lights in an unmarked Chevy Tahoe. That caused the motorcyclist to u-turn again and go westbound up the Kent-Des Moines Road.
The officer estimated the driver was going about 80 mph up the hill and decided to call off the pursuit because of heavy traffic near Military Road. Police tried to locate the man through the license plate on the motorcycle but were unable to find him to make an arrest.
Theft
Police cited two men for investigation of third-degree theft after they allegedly took T-shirts and baseball caps from a store in the 400 block of Ramsay Way at the Kent Station shopping mall.
The men walked out of the store without paying for the items and were later stopped by officers at the Kent transit center, according to the police report.
The men claimed they paid for the items but did not have a receipt. The two T-shirts and baseball caps were valued at about $107 and returned by officers to the store.
A third man also was reportedly involved in the theft, but police did not find him.
