King County closed the courthouse Tuesday at the Maleng Regional Justice Center in Kent due to a water system pump failure that caused wastewater to leak into a small section of the ground floor of the building.
King County Facilities Management is investigating what caused pumps to fail, according to a county news release. Employees and the public were instructed to leave for the day. The closure affected all public services in the courthouse, including courts, Community Service Center and the law library.
The county jail was not affected.
The courthouse will open at 9 a.m. Wednesday with all services available.
Crews from the county and a contractor worked through the afternoon to clean up the spill, remove affected material and assess damage. A courtroom and associated holding area sustained the most damage, but both are expected to be operational Wednesday. County officials didn’t have a dollar estimate on the damage. Crews repaired the malfunctioning pumps.
Updates will be posted on @KingCountyWA on Twitter, and on Facebook, as well as kingcounty.gov.
