Several local churches in the Kent and Covington area – Holy Spirit Catholic Parish, Kent Covenant Church, Zion Lutheran Church, Faith Baptist Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Kent Stake) – on Sept. 14 will commemorate the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance (NDOSR), which was enacted into law by Congress in 2009.
The NDOSR has its roots in the 9/11 nonprofit organization, MyGoodDeed, which has had widespread support by the 9/11 community and leading national service organizations. The intent for NDOSR is to commemorate the events of the Sept. 11, 2001 attack on America by coming together in united service in our communities in the same inspiring way so many did in New York City in 2001.
These local Kent/Covington churches have organized around the following events, some of which are open to the public (all events will take place on Sept. 14):
- Tacoma General Hospital – sewing T-shirts and pillow cases for prematurely born babies
- Children’s Therapy Center – landscaping, repair & painting projects. Open to the public, 9 a.m. to noon, 10811 SE Kent-Kangley Road, Kent. To volunteer contact Cindy Startin at 253-631-0557
- SHAG Housing Projects – cleaning, gift bags, socializing, court-yard cleanup
- Kent Parks Project – Lake Fenwick Park; pruning, spreading bark, shrub/invasive plant removal. Open to the public, 9 a.m. to noon, 25828 Lake Fenwick Road. Volunteers are asked to bring pruners and gloves. To volunteer, contact Startin
- Northwest Harvest – sorting and packing food in the Kent Warehouse
