King County is scheduled to start demolition on Wednesday of the Alvord T Bridge in Kent.
Demolition of the bridge and paving of the turn-around is expected to be complete by mid-October. The bridge was permanently closed on June 5.
Construction activities will occur from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Nearby residents and businesses can expect to see large equipment, such as excavators and a crane for lifting the bridge, as well as an increase in truck traffic. The noise level of this work isn’t expected to exceed the noise level of the surrounding industrial area.
On the north side of the bridge on South 259th Street at Third Avenue South, there will be a period of single-lane closure for approximately four days during working hours. Flaggers will direct traffic around the work zone.
The bridge, originally built in 1914, spans the Green River on 78th Avenue South at the southern city limits. The bridge has low traffic volumes. It is rated as one of the most deficient bridges in the state of Washington and is classified as structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.
