A King County Council online candidate forum for Districts 5 and 9 is set for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25.
Hosted by the 47th and 11th Legislative District Democrats, the forum will feature District 5 incumbent Dave Upthegrove and challenger Shukri Olow as well as Kim-Khanh Van and Chris Franco, who are challenging District 9 incumbent Reagan Dunn. Districts 5 and 9 each include portions of Kent.
It will be a moderated discussion format that hits on a variety of issues.
Upthegrove, of Des Moines, is in his second four-year term on the council. Voters elected him in 2013 with 68% of the vote over Andy Massagli. He was reelected in 2017 when he ran unopposed.
Olow, of, Kent, is a community organizer who has served on several boards, including Kent Youth and Family Services, Kent YMCA, One America Votes and the Somali Health Board.
Van is in her first term on the Renton City Council after voters elected her in 2019 with 65% of the vote over Thomas Trautmann.
Franco, of Renton, works for King County as a program manager for the Office of Equity & Social Justice and is a combat veteran.
Dunn was first elected to the council in 2005. He defeated Denice Carnahan 66% to 34% in 2017 to earn another four-year term.
Candidate filing week in King County is May 17-21. The primary is Aug. 3 and the general election is Nov. 2.
