A King County Council committee approved a grant of $1.04 million to the city of Kent to spend on three park projects.
The city will receive funding for renovations at Salt Air Vista Park and Morrill Meadows Park as well as enhancements along the Green River Trail and Interurban Trail.
The King County Council’s Transportation, Economy and Environment Committee on Tuesday, April 19 approved the first of three rounds of Parks Capital and Open Space Grants, according to an email from County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove, whose District 5 includes Kent.
The competitive grant program is part of the voter-approved 2020-2025 King County Parks Levy and seeks to assist eligible entities with open space acquisition, active recreation, passive recreation and local trails.
“All residents of King County should have access to outdoor spaces to play, enjoy nature, and relax, but we know that residents in South King County don’t always have access to such spaces,” Upthegrove said. “With this county funding, the city of Kent will be able to make improvements throughout its park system and I’m proud that King County could partner in their efforts.”
In August 2019, King County voters overwhelmingly supported the Parks Levy which provides funding support for parks and open space throughout the county.
“Improvements to city and regional green space is a key action in addressing health disparities and climate impacts,” said Kent Parks Director Julie Parascondola. “With this county funding, The city of Kent can increase its ongoing efforts of making these city assets more functional and accessible for all residents.”
The legislation will go before the full county council for final approval in the coming weeks.
• Salt Air Vista Park renovation
Grant amount: $338,000
Scope of work: Project will include replacement of playground and new swing set, nature trails, stormwater improvements and enhanced landscaping.
Timeline: Construction in spring/summer 2022
• Morrill Meadows Park renovation
Grant amount: $500,000
Scope of work: This project is considered phase 2 of improvements and includes replacement and expansion of the playground, new nature play area, ADA accessibility upgrades, stage for summer concerts and events and enhanced landscaping.
Timeline: Construction in late summer 2022
• Regional trail enhancements
Grant amount: $206,437
Scope of work: Project will include upgrades and standardization of signage, wayfinding, and site furnishings along the Green River and Interurban Trails.
Timeline: Construction in 2023
