Operation Warm and the Kent Firefighters Foundation delivered almost 200 new coats Wednesday to children of the Birch Creek Head Start program in Kent.
The delivery is the third by local firefighters as they support Operation Warm (operationwarm.com). Two earlier deliveries benefited the children of Highline Public Schools, according to a Kent Fire Department media release.
Socioeconomic hardships can make it difficult for families to provide all that their children need. For many of the children in the Birch Creek Head Start program at 27360 129th Pl. S.E., this is the first new coat they have ever owned. Aside from being warmer, a new coat can bring a higher level of self-esteem to a child and generate a feeling of worth.
The Birch Creek complex is part of the subsidized housing program of King County and includes a food bank, youth center and the Kent Family Center featuring a career development center. It is a WorkSource connection site and provides wellness education, and ESL and citizenship classes.
Providing new coats to the children of Birch Creek is only possible because of the donations by The Muckleshoot Charity Fund (Muckleshoot.nsn.us), Teamsters Local 117 (teamsters117.org), The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Lodge 751 (iam751.org), KISW Radio (99.9 FM) and the Kent Firefighters Foundation (kentfirefighters.org).
