Kent-based World Relief Seattle will receive a grant between $15,000 and $25,000 to help address food insecurity issues in households with children ages 5 and younger.
No Kid Hungry, a campaign from the Washington, D.C.-based national nonprofit Share Our Strength, will invest $3 million in grants to organizations across the nation focused on early childhood to help decrease food insecurity among young children.
“We’re so excited that we will be able to address and mitigate food insecurity for households with children ages 0-5,” said Chitra Hanstad, World Relief Seattle executive director, in an April 13 email. “World Relief Seattle works primarily with refugees and immigrants in vulnerable situations. These communities have been hit hard by the pandemic. These funds will help us access food benefits through (state) programs such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Program), as well as provide wraparound casework for families.”
World Relief Seattle was one of three groups in Washington to receive grants between $15,000 and $25,000, according to a Share Our Strength spokesperson. The other nonprofits were Busy Bee’s Child Development Center in Toppenish and Multicultural Child and Family Hope Center in Tacoma.
The grants will serve more than 120 early child care centers, health care providers and community organizations across 34 states, reaching 170,000 children, with four out of five working primarily in communities of color.
