Hundreds of visitors crowded the Showare Center on Tuesday night for the ninth annual Kent School District Technology Expo, which shows off some of the cutting edge devices used to enhance learning in the district.
The expo featured 113 different booths, ranging from KSD technology programs, private company vendors and individual classrooms. While some companies like Boeing, Microsoft, and HP had reserved spaces, the majority of the booth space was given over to teachers who were able to show how technology had improved education in their classrooms.
Kent Elementary teachers Jana Yamada and Patty Dunmire showed off how using the district’s Smartboards and iPads made learning more interactive for their kindergarten classes. While Yamada cited the utility of having interactive games to help her students learn, Dunmire uses the tech to illustrate concepts to students quickly. In a district with so many different languages, she can bring up images as an alternative to verbal explanation.
“You have information at your fingertips in seconds,” said Dunmire, “if I talk about a platypus, it helps with visualization.”
The classroom booths weren’t limited to teaching methods in elementary schools. Other booths displayed the multimedia equipment that ranged from film crew equipment to DJ studios. Robotics clubs from several high schools displayed their creations and allowed visitors to control the robots. From kindergarten through 12th grade, everyone had tech to show off.
