The city of Kent will close South 228th Street between 72nd Avenue South and Sixth Avenue North from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. April 29 through May 11 so Puget Sound Energy can relocate underground utilities near the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
The work is another phase in preparation for construction of an overpass across the UP tracks. The grade separation of tracks and road will provide a regional connection between the nation’s fourth largest warehouse and industrial center in Kent with the Ports of Tacoma and Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport.
Detour routes will be posted.
The remainder of the construction is anticipated to begin after utility relocations are complete, which will result in the closure of South 228th Street to through traffic for the majority of construction.
Utility work will take about three months. City officials estimate the overpass will be completed in 2020.
The Legislature approved $15 million for the project as part of the $16 billion transportation package adopted in 2015. Kent also will use a $3 million federal grant and a $3 million state Freight Mobility Strategic Investment Board grant to help pay for the project.
