Educators at Scenic Hill Elementary School in Kent decorate the halls and classrooms with college-themed bulletin boards, pennants and flags in hopes that students will work toward the goal of a college education.
Now the staff has started a Scenic Hill Scholarship to help students from the school pay for college once they graduate from high school.
“The school is now taking the initiative to make this dream become a reality for Scenic Hill alums,” according to a press release from the Scenic Hill Scholarship Committee.
They are seeking others to donate to the fund.
“The committee would like to invite the greater Scenic Hill community and local businesses to support their scholarship endeavor and help the dream of college become a reality for some local Kent students,” according to the press release.
At the conclusion of morning messages at the school, scholars and staff alike recite, “After high school comes college!”
During the 2021-2022 school year, the school began to think of ways they could turn their motto into a reality for Scenic Hill alum. Under the leadership of staff member Jason Russell, the school formed a scholarship committee and staff pledged money to start a scholarship fund.
To date, the Scenic Hill staff has personally pledged $3,345 to the fund.
Principal Harjeet Sandhu appreciates the staff’s generosity.
“I’m incredibly amazed by the generosity of our staff who are committed to providing our Scenic Hill alumni with an opportunity to attend college and the chance for a more hopeful future,” Sandhu said.
The committee’s goal is to offer multiple scholarships to deserving applicants.
Scenic Hill Elementary is at 26025 Woodland Way S., east of downtown Kent and south of Kent-Meridian High School.
