Kent’s Horizon, Crestwood elementaries receive School of Distinction awards

Two elementary schools in the Kent School District have been named a 2016 School of Distinction.

Horizon Elementary on Kent’s East Hill and Crestwood Elementary in Covington are among 36 schools in the Puget Sound Educational Service District selected for the award. Crestwood is a multiyear recipient.

Now in its 9th year, the School of Distinction (SOD) awards were created in the summer of 2007 to recognize the highest improving schools in Washington State. The awards are not intended as a replacement for state and federal accountability measures of school performance, but as a supplemental measure to recognize and celebrate school staff, students and leaders who improve performance in reading/English language arts and mathematics.

PSESD will host a celebration for the School of Distinction award recipients in late October.

“We are pleased to be a partner in honoring schools within our region that set a high standard in realizing dramatic achievement gains for students,” John Welch, PSESD superintendent, said in a media release. “We applaud the students, families, educators and communities for working together to make academic success a reality for every child. We are delighted now to help share in celebrating your successes and we thank you for setting a high bar for us all.”
