Kent resident Carmen Goers recently received a Martin Luther King Medal of Distinguished Service award from King County Councilmember Reagan Dunn.
The award recognizes individuals whose work has answered the question asked by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “What are you doing for others?”
Goers has a long track record of working to improve her communities, according to a Nov. 9 news release from Dunn. This includes taking an active position in her city government, mentoring girls in the foster care system, working to improve the lives of incarcerated women and coaching youth sports. She has also served on countless boards, committees and commissions, working to fund raise and guide high-profile projects and organizations across South King County.
“Carmen Goers has gone above and beyond in her efforts to make a difference in our community,” Dunn said. “Since moving to the area after her family completed military service, she has been passionate about providing support to others so they have the opportunity to thrive. Carmen has inspired me and so many others across King County. I am honored to present her with this award.”
Goers is co-chair of the Kent Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee and recently emceed the Kent mayoral debate. She also is a member of the city of Kent’s Public Facilities District Board that helps oversee the accesso ShoWare Center. She works as a commercial lending officer for Heritage Bank in Kent.
“I am honored to be chosen to receive this distinguished award from Councilmember Dunn,” Goers said. “It is my hope that with this award I can continue to shine a light on things happening in our community as well as inspire others to get involved in their local community. Anyone can get involved, and when we do, everyone in our community benefits.”
This marks the sixth year that county council members have each selected someone from their district whose work embodies the spirit of King’s question.
