The city of Kent plans to increase the water pressure for many properties on the East Hill by performing a “pressure zone switchover.”
This project will be done in several phases, ultimately resulting in greater water pressure for the city’s water customers, according to a city media release.
City officials said they know most customers will consider the water pressure increase beneficial; however, the city needs to take precautions to prevent potential problems. It’s possible some customers’ water pressure will exceed the uniform plumbing code maximum allowable pressure rating of 80 pounds per square inch. Too much water pressure could damage household appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines, affect their warranties, or both.
To prevent this from happening, city staff will install a pressure reducing valve (PRV) behind water meters if needed. City staff will first need to assess the type of meters customers have, and what type of PRV, if any, is needed.
What should customers expect?
• The city has hired a consultant to inventory the water meters, and will be in the area the month of March.
• After the inventory is complete, customers will receive a written request for permission to install the PRV on the water service line if needed.
When will this work be finished?
• City staff anticipates the conversion work will begin late this summer or early fall, with the entire pressure zone transferred and operational by fall 2019.
