Kentridge High School seniors Fern Bettinger and Max Kendall captured the Small Ensemble Mixed Vocal category at the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) State Solo and Ensemble competition at Central Washington University in Ellensburg on Friday, April 25.
They sang the Papageno and Papagena duet from Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” They were accompanied on piano by Kentridge Choir teacher Catherine Robinson.
Bettinger also competed at state with Kentridge senior Sage Richardson in the Women’s Small Vocal Ensemble category singing a Handel duet.
To compete at state, Bettinger, Kendall and Richardson won their respective categories at the Green River regional competition on March 16 at Auburn Riverside High School. Bettinger and Kendall placed as first alternates in their solo categories.
Kentridge vocalists also placed as the first alternate in the Small Ensemble Mixed Vocal category and as a second alternate in two solo categories.
In April, three Kentridge Choirs won all of their categories at the California Heritage festival. Combined with the Kentridge bands and orchestra, the Kentridge music program won the Heritage Festival Sweepstakes award grand prize. Kentridge Choirs were invited to sing at Carnegie Hall.
