Kent YMCA receives $250,000 from Delta Air Lines Foundation

New facility to open in September; fundraising goal at 95 percent

Kent’s new YMCA under construction on the East Hill received a $250,000 commitment from the Delta Air Lines Foundation that puts the facility at 95 percent of its $36.6 million fundraising goal.

The new YMCA is scheduled to open in September between Morrill Meadows Park and East Hill Park near Southeast 248th Street and 104th Avenue Southeast. The city of Kent is paying about $11 million toward the project.

Other major contributors include about $5 million in state grants; a $2 million anonymous donation through the YMCA of Greater Seattle Board; $1 million from the Morford family; $1 million from the King County Council and $500,000 from the Employees Community Fund of Boeing.

“We’re so grateful for Delta’s generosity over the years,” said Loria Yeadon, president and CEO of the YMCA of Greater Seattle, in a press release. “We believe everyone deserves the opportunity and resources to reach their full potential, and Delta has supported our programs in numerous ways, not only financially but in time, effort, and volunteerism.”

The 50,000 square-foot facility will offer community gathering spaces, an aquatic center, gym, three group fitness rooms and a premium cardio and free-weight fitness floor. It will also bring a significant expansion of school, child care and enrichment programs for children and teens hosted by the Y.

“Serving communities is at Delta’s core, and we partner closely with the YMCA of Greater Seattle through our commitment to donate 1 percent of net profits to charitable organizations each year,” said Tony Gonchar, Delta’s vice president – Seattle. “As a YMCA of Greater Seattle board member, I’m well aware of the great work the Y is doing to build community and encourage the healthy development of our youth, and this grant from The Delta Air Lines Foundation will ensure the Y continues their service to our community for generations.”
