A 43-year-old Kent woman was killed New Year’s Eve in Southern California when she tried to walk across Interstate 5 and was hit by at least one car.
Ellaine Craig had pulled her vehicle onto the shoulder of I-5 southbound at about 8:55 p.m. Dec. 31 near the town of Lebec, about 80 miles north of Los Angeles.
Craig that exited her vehicle and walked across all four southbound lanes and climbed over the center guardrail, according to a collision report from the California Highway Patrol.
For an undetermined reason, Craig then walked into the second northbound lane into the path of an unknown vehicle. The driver of that vehicle failed to stop and left the scene. She was struck by an unknown number of vehicles in the second lane, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
