Kentridge and Kentlake high-school drama students earned several nods June 9 at what has been dubbed the state championship of high-school musicals, the 5th Avenue High School Musical Theatre Awards.
Around 2,500 drama students, teachers and parents from nominated Washington high schools screamed and cheered for three hours during the sixth-annual awards event at Benaroya Hall in Seattle as awards were announced in 21 different categories. Kentridge earned top honors in three categories, and Kentlake won in two.
Kentridge’s Danny Lindgren took home the award for “Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role” and the school’s Kirk Dyer and Derek Clement won “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble Group.” Kentridge student Todd Lane earned special honors for “Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design.”
Kentlake High School walked away with awards for “Outstanding Scenic Design” and “Outstanding Program Design” at the ceremony.
In May, Kentridge High School received 14 nominations for its productions of “Little Me,” “She Loves Me” and “Mack and Mabel.” Nominations included “Outstanding Music Direction” for “She Loves Me,” “Outstanding Overall Musical Production” for “Mack and Mabel,” and “Outstanding Performance by an Actor in Leading Role” for Danny Lindgren’s portrayal of Nobel in “Little Me.”
The school also received an honorable mention for choreography in “Mack and Mabel” and a special nod for Todd Lane’s sound design.
Kentlake High School received five nominations for its production of “Damn Yankees,” including “Outstanding Choreography,” “Outstanding Scenic Design,” and “Outstanding Lobby Display.” Also, Kentlake student Keenan Ward earned an honorable mention for his performance as Mr. Applegate in “Damn Yankees.”
