A history professor from Ohio State University will examine race and racism in America during The Equity and Inclusion Speaker Series sponsored by the city of Kent.
Hasan Kwame Jeffries will speak about the most troubling aspects of America’s past, particularly slavery and segregation, and by unpacking why we as a nation are so reluctant to talk about difficult historical truths, according to a city of Kent statement.
Jeffries will discuss “Confronting Hard History” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 27 at the Kent-Meridian Performing Arts Center, 10020 SE 256th St. The event is free.
Attendees will gain a better understanding of the origin, evolution and persistence of racial inequality in America today, according to the city of Kent. They will learn about the extraordinary efforts of ordinary people to transform America into a fair and just society. And they will be given the tools needed to talk about race accurately and address racism effectively.
According to the Ohio State University website, Jeffries is an associate professor of history. He teaches courses on the civil rights and Black power movement.
Jeffries was born in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated summa cum laude from Morehouse College in Georgia with a bachelor of arts in history in 1994. He earned a doctorate in American history with a specialization in African American history from Duke University in 2002. He taught for a year at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, before joining the faculty at The Ohio State University in 2003.
