The Kent School Board this past week adopted the 2009-2010 calendar and school will start a little earlier next year.
According to the calendar, classes will begin Aug. 31, a Monday, giving students and teachers a week in the classroom before Labor Day weekend unofficially ends the summer.
Students and teachers will receive two full weeks off for winter break from Dec. 21 to Jan. 4, 2010 and additional weeks in February for President’s Week (Feb. 15-19) and Spring Break (April 5-9).
The last day of school is scheduled for June 18, with June 21 and 22 set aside for school closure make-up days, in case next winter forces as many snow days as this year’s storms did.
The calendar was one of two proposed and was the one favored by the teachers’ union. The main difference between the two was the week in February. Also on the first draft, the school year would have begun a few days later and ended a day sooner.
A vote of teachers and other staff members revealed a preference for having presidents’ week off by a vote of nearly 3-1.
