Kent schools will start the 2020-2021 year on Thursday, Sept. 3 rather than the initial date of Aug. 27.
The Kent School Board of Directors on Aug. 12 officially approved the Back to School 2020-21 Plan in compliance with OSPI, State Board of Education and state Department of Health guidelines for reopening, according to a district Facebook and website post.
“We will reopen in remote learning, and the first day of school will be Sept. 3, for students in grades 1-12,” according to the post. “Kindergarteners will begin on Wednesday, Sept. 9. The board approved a revised school year calendar for 2020-21 to ensure additional professional learning days and flexible days for transition as needed for COVID-19 related closures.”
District officials thanked its labor partners for their support in creating this revised calendar to support the successful start of the new school year. The district’s Back to School Task Force members also contributed to the start of the new year with weeks of planning and preparation.
The revised plans and supporting documents are available on on the district website.
The district’s legal and labor team continues to meet with labor partners to bargain the impacts of operationalizing the Back to School plans. The plans will continue to be revised and updated as bargaining continues, and new guidance is released from governing authorities.
