In a surprise announcement during the Jan. 13 Kent School Board meeting, Director Chris Davies announced he was resigning from the board effective Feb. 11.
Calling it a “difficult decision,” Davies said in a prepared statement that as his tax business was experiencing “rapid growth” he felt he no longer had the time necessary to dedicate to the board.
“Unfortunately it is has become increasingly clear with each passing day that I cannot continue business as usual and something has to change in my life for the sake of my family and my ability to do what I need to do and still be able to give it 100 percent to everything in my life,” he said.
Davies said he is leaving in order to spend more time with his wife and elementary school-age children, while the kids still think their parents are “cool.”
“This is all about family and my desire to spend as much time at home as I can so that Julie and I can watch our kids continue to grow and mature and be there for them when they need help with that math homework or just want to hang out and play a game together,” he said.
Davies said he has been considering resigning for several months and only decided to do so after discussions with his family, other members of the board and Superintendent Edward Lee Vargas.
Davies was elected to the Director District No. 2 potion in 2007. He has previously served as the board’s legislative representative and was vice-president in 2009.
All of the board members expressed regret as the voted to accept Davies’ resignation.
“Chris, you will be truly missed,” said Board President Debbie Straus.
The district will be posting next week for a replacement, which will be appointed by the school board.
Applicants must live in Director District No. 2, which encompasses the northeastern region of the district, including Kentridge High School, Meeker and Northwood Middle Schools, and Fairwood, Ridgewood, Carriage Crest, Glenridge, Lake Youngs and Emerald Park Elementary Schools.
Interested parties must contact the district to request an information packet and then provide a biographical sketch and a statement about why they want to be on the board.
If there are more than three applicants, the board will select three for interviews during an open meeting and will then appoint the new board member during a public meeting as well.
Straus said the hope is to fill the position by the March 10 meeting.
