Kent Rotary, in partnership with the City of Kent Parks Department, annually hosts a kids fishing experience at a two-acre pond in Kent, affectionately known as the Ol’Fishin’ Hole.
This recent one-day event attracted hundreds of youngsters from toddlers up to the age of 14 (no license is required).
With the help of Kent Rotary, and hundreds of hours of volunteer work, a former derelict pond, was converted into an attractive fishing pond and park that is enjoyed by hundreds of people all year long.
The summer fishing season is kicked off on the Saturday nearest the middle of May each year. This year more than 2,000 hatchery trout were placed in the pond for the enjoyment and excitement of the community’s youngsters.
The Coast Guard provided a water safety display with all kinds of tips to keep Kids safe during the summer. Taco Time sent their wagon out and supplied free tacos for all.
Fishing started at 7:30 a.m. and ended at 12:30 p.m.with 25 to 30 Rotary members acting as guides and helpers. To avoid congestion fishing is done in groups rotating every half hour; this way several hundred children can have the thrill of catching their first fish.
Besides acting as guides and helpers, Kent Rotary provided fishing poles, bait, hooks, and a fish net. They even provided expert fish cleaners and a barbecue ready to cook those hard fought catches. To top it off, each youngster was given their own rod.
