Kent Reporter photographer Charles Cortes led the Kent newsroom staff this year in awards at the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association’s 2010 Better Newspaper Contest.
Cortes, who has been with the Kent Reporter for three years, took first place in Best Color Feature photo with his shot, “The screaming is music to his ears,” showing a veteran carnival worker flashing a big grin as an amusement-park ride terrifies its riders.
Cortes’ award was one of three earned by the Kent Reporter. The photo also garnered Cortes a third-place award in the national Suburban Newspaper Association’s contest earlier this year.
Cortes also took third place in Best Online Photo Gallery or Slide Show, with his feature “Candlelight vigil for late K-M student Dorian Tursic draws 500,” a slide show illustrating the emotional memorial service Kent-Meridian students had for well-regarded classmate Dorian Tursic, who died in a car accident.
Other award-winners at the Kent Reporter include:
Staff writer Erick Walker, who earned second place for Best Sports Feature with his “It’s all about heart,” a heart-warming story about the Kent-Meridian girls’ soccer team.
Editor Laura Pierce, earning third place for Best Color Photo Essay, for “Remembering their own,” illustrating the Lakewood Police officers memorial ceremony, in which Kent Police took part.
The Kent Reporter is part of Sound Publishing, whose individuals and staffs won 174 awards in the statewide contest. Awards were presented Oct. 1 at the WNPA’s annual conference and banquet in Wenatchee, with a contingent of 14 Sound Publishing executives, publishers and editors in attendance.
Also, the Reporter papers as a group won first place in Best Special Section – Topical/Non-Tourism for Navigate the Future which took an in-depth look at transportation issues in the region; and second place in the same category for the Flood-Preparedness Guide, which illustrated best ways to be ready for the winter flood season.
