Kent Police capture man who shot at neighbor’s house on East Hill | Update

A Monday afternoon standoff with a barricaded suspect at a Kent East Hill home ended with the man being taken into custody.

Kent Police took a 28-year-old man into custody early Monday evening after he had shot at his neighbor’s residence in the 22800 block of 134th Avenue Southeast at about 12:32 p.m., according to a Kent Police media release

Officers responded to reports of a man who had just shot at his neighbor’s house and then returned to his own residence. When police arrived, they recognized the residence and the subject as a person that they had dealt with due to mental issues. There is also an active mental health committal order filed with the courts, to have the subject detained and committed for a 72-our mental health evaluation.

When officers attempted to engage the suspect in negotiations, he came to the window of his house and pointed a rifle at police. Two Kent officers fired at him and he retreated back into the room out of sight. Continued negotiations were attempted, but were met with no answer.

The Valley SWAT Team responded to the scene. Multiple attempts to make contact with the man were met again with no response. Entry into the house was attempted and the man eventually made his way to the front door where he was taken into custody. Medics treated the man for injuries and transported him to a local hospital for treatment.

The two officers were uninjured and have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard for officers that have been involved in critical incidents. The Valley Investigation Team was requested to conduct the investigation.
