A Kent Police officer-involved shooting early Wednesday morning, Aug. 28 at the Madison Plaza Apartments, 102 Madison Ave., reportedly ended with a man dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers responded at about 12:40 a.m. to the seven-story apartments, which opened in 2022 just east of Highway 167, after a 911 call reported sounds of six to seven gunshots being fired, according to a Aug. 28 Kent Police news release
Officers arrived in the area and were outside of their patrol vehicles when they heard more gunshots that were believed to have been fired at them, according to the news release. One officer returned fire towards the suspect who was on an upper story of the apartment complex.
As officers cleared the building, they detained a subject who advised that their brother, believed to be the suspect shooter, had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound in an apartment on the upper floor, according to police. Officers secured the unit and rendered aid until medics arrived to take over lifesaving measures. Despite their efforts, the 34-year-old man died at the scene.
The Valley Independent Investigative Team, which includes the police departments of Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Tukwila, Renton and Port of Seattle, was called in to conduct the investigation of the officer shooting, which will exclude the Kent Police.
No officers were injured, and the involved officer will be placed on administrative leave, following standard protocol, according to police.
