Kent neighborhoods are preparing to turn on the porch lights, meet and greet their neighbors and take a stand against crime on Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The Kent Police Department is getting ready for the annual National Night Out (NNO) celebration and invites residents to participate. This is the 32nd anniversary of this national event, which takes place annually on the first Tuesday in August.

Police Chief Ken Thomas says National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness and generate support and participation in anti-crime programs such as Neighborhood Block Watch.

“National Night Out also strengthens neighborhood spirit and sends a message to criminals that neighborhoods are united and fighting back,” Thomas said in a media release.

Neighborhoods across the city are encouraged to organize their own block parties. Typical events include barbecues, ice cream socials, pizza parties and potlucks. Many also organize raffles, games and events for the kids.

Why should you participate?

• Improve the safety of your block by building healthy relationships

• Have a fun time with your neighbors

• Build community and increase communication

• Receive a goody bag with prizes and ideas for your celebration

• Reinforce the partnership of residents and police to combat crime

• Discuss neighborhood issues

• Help reactivate your neighborhood Block Watch group

Police command staff, patrol officers and city officials will visit parties as time permits.

Registration closes on Friday, July 31. Register online at KentNNO.com. For more information, call 253-856-5884.
