A man reportedly stole a vehicle that was left running in front of a Kent apartment complex Thursday night and killed a man who was trying to stop him.

A 31-year-cold Kent resident was at the Somerset apartments,25220 109th Ct. S.E., and had left his vehicle running around 7 p.m. While he was out of his vehicle, a black male suspect got into the running vehicle and started to leave the complex. Seeing his vehicle being stolen, the victim tried to climb through the open passenger window.

The suspect then drove out of the complex and onto 109th Avenue Southeast, with the victim hanging out of the passenger window. Witnesses say it appeared the suspect was intentionally trying to get the victim out of the vehicle by swerving and hitting the curb.

After about a block, the victim was thrown from the vehicle and was seriously injured. Witnesses started first aid until officers arrived and took over doing CPR. Medics arrived and took the victim to Harborview Medical Center in Seattlel where he later died.

An All-Points Bulletin was put out to surrounding agencies for the stolen vehicle. About an hour later, Renton Police responded to a vehicle collision involving the victim’s stolen vehicle. They responded and detained a person of interest.

Detectives are investigating.
