Kent Police received 371 fireworks-related complaint calls through 911 from July 1-5, a drop from the 524 handled last year.
Officers issued three citations for illegal fireworks and seized 20 pounds of fireworks, Police Chief Ken Thomas reported to the City Council’s Public Safety Committee on July 12. Police seized 105 pounds of fireworks in 2015.
Police busted three people for using fireworks outside of the legal hours. Kent only allows fireworks to be discharged on July 4.
“There were no significant events and no significant injuries in Kent,” Thomas said.
Twenty officers were assigned to extra fireworks patrols from July 1-5.
The sale, use and possession of all fireworks will be illegal next year in Kent under a new ordinance adopted by the council.
In Federal Way, where fireworks have been illegal for 23 years, the police received 215 fireworks-related calls from June 27 to July 5, according to the Federal Way Mirror newspaper. That is a drop from the 270 calls received last year.
