Kent Police Blotter: Jan. 25 to Feb. 7

Incidents include deaths, carjacking, robberies, erratic man, SWAT response

A sampling of Kent Police incidents Jan. 25 to Feb. 7:

Jan. 25

Store assault: 9:50 a.m., officers were dispatched to an assault at the Fred Meyer store, 10201 SE 240th St. A man had sustained a laceration to his neck from what appeared to be from a knife. The victim was transported to the hospital.

Bar carjacking: 4 p.m., officers were dispatched to a carjacking at the Clubhouse Sports Bar and Grill, 10432 Kent Kangley Road. The victim said he was in the process of trying to sell his vehicle and met a potential buyer/suspect at a location in Auburn. They drove the vehicle to the Clubhouse Bar where the victim thought they would negotiate a deal. However, the suspect pulled out a gun and robbed the victim of his vehicle. The vehicle was located four days later in the downtown area of Kent.

Jan. 26

Body found: 2:55 p.m., officers were dispatched to a deceased male who was determined to have committed suicide just south of 9400 Canyon Drive in the greenbelt area. The male was a reported missing person from Kent in November 2021.

Erratic man: 6:23 p.m., officers went to the 7-Eleven at 132nd Avenue SE and SE 240th Street for a male acting erratically, screaming at customers and destroying items inside. This male had also called 911 and gave his info, so that before arrival, officers confirmed he had several DV Kent warrants. They contacted him and it was an immediate struggle to detain him. The male gave all indications of excited delirium, but officers calmly got him detained with minimal force. They transitioned to first aid and maintained control of a very combative patient.

Jan. 27

Robbery outside home: 7:17 p.m., officers were dispatched to an armed robbery at a residence in the 12300 block of SE 221st St. The victim had gone grocery shopping and while she was unloading her groceries, she was approached by two unidentified suspects armed with firearms. They robbed her of her purse, cellphone and bank cards. The suspects fled the scene and were not apprehended. The victim provided the location of her cellphone by using the find my phone app and some of her belongings to include her phone were found in the 21700 block of 130th Avenue SE.

Jan. 28

Commercial burglary: 4:38 a.m., officers were dispatched to a commercial burglary that occurred at the DACO Corporation, 8825 S. 184th St. An employee had arrived at work to find a vehicle parked out front. At least three subjects ran from the building and the vehicle fled the area. The employee went inside the business to find someone had shut off the security panels and there was no forced entry; thus, someone associated with the business appeared to have been involved. It was discovered that the business suffered over a $10,000 loss which included computers, tools and cash.

Jan. 29

SWAT response: 5:30 p.m., a suspect violated a no contact order then fled inside his Forest Creek Apartment, 24802 99th Place S. The suspect had violated the same order two times the night prior. He also had a confirmed felony harassment DV warrant out of Pierce County. Per the victim and the suspect’s mother, he most likely had a firearm. Patrol units surrounded the apartment. SWAT responded and deployed several SWAT tactics. The suspect was not located and must have left the apartment prior to officers arriving.

Jan. 30

Man dies: 12:11 a.m., officers were dispatched to CPR in progress at the former Kmart, 24800 W. Valley Highway. Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority and medics responded providing life-saving efforts which were not successful. The King County Medical Examiner was called and took custody of the 61-year-old man. What appeared to be a gunshot wound and/or blunt force trauma to the back of the subject’s head was discovered.

Jan. 31

Attempted bank robbery: 5:37 p.m., officers were dispatched to a bank robbery that occurred at the US Bank, 305 Fourth Ave N. An employee was approached by a male customer who handed the employee a note essentially stating he was armed, and he was robbing the bank. The employee told the suspect he did not have access to the money in the register and would have to go to the back to get some. The suspect paused, grabbed the note and fled the area on foot.

Feb. 1

Bank robbery: 1:52 p.m., officers were dispatched to a bank robbery at the Chase Bank, 512 W. Smith St. A male wearing a mask provided a note to one of the clerks stating he was armed and was demanding money. The clerk complied and the suspect fled the area on foot after taking a significant amount of money during the incident.

Feb. 2

Smoke shop armed robbery: 3:08 p.m., officers were dispatched to an armed robbery at NW Smokes, 10214 SE 240th St. A male suspect entered the store, pulled out a gun and began robbing the business. The suspect ended up taking $300 to $400 cash and was last seen walking westbound from the business.

Shots fired at apartment: 3:07 p.m., officers were dispatched to an illegal discharge at the Berkeley Heights Apartment complex, 22804 90th Way S. A witness reported a male shooting directly into a small park/playground area in front of the L Building. The small park/playground was unoccupied at the time of the shooting. Officers conducted the initial investigation and found at least 12 rounds were fired, and the rounds ended up hitting a specific apartment. Officers made entry into the victim apartment and found it was unoccupied. Officers obtained information about a potential suspect who appeared to live within the complex.

Feb. 3

Robbery at apartments: Officers were dispatched to a robbery at the White House Apartments, 9229 S. 244th St. A victim had been robbed at knifepoint. The victim had been at Snoqualmie Casino gambling and was approached by a male who was looking for a ride back to Kent. She agreed to give this person a ride. The person/suspect told the victim he would pay her for the ride once he arrived at his destination. Upon their arrival in Kent, the victim remained in her vehicle as the male walked to an unknown apartment presumably to obtain some money. When the male returned, he robbed her of her purse and other belongings at knifepoint. The suspect ended up dropping his cellphone and hat at the scene after struggling with the victim.

Feb. 6

Woman waves gun: Officers were dispatched to a suspicious subject at the Safeway at 13101 SE Kent Kangley Road. They were told there was a female in the parking lot waving a gun around and pointing it at passing vehicles. Upon arrival, the female suspect had left the scene. Officers were able to identify her through video surveillance and established probable cause for her arrest.

Feb. 7

Girl shot by brother: 9:14 p.m., officers responded to Valley Medical Center in Renton for a Kent shooting victim. The 8-year-old victim was shot by her 11-year-old brother. After several interviews at the house with family members, it was revealed the 11-year-old son was able to access his grandfather’s locked bedroom. He grabbed a shotgun from underneath the bed and was playing around with it. The gun then discharged birdshot into the floor, but also striking his sister in the legs. She was taken to the hospital by her mother and eventually released with no other significant injuries.
