A sampling of Kent Police incidents April 27 to May 9:
April 27
Bigfoot Java robbery: 11:37 p.m., officers were dispatched to the Bigfoot Java, 21116 84th Ave. S., regarding a robbery. An employee was working alone when she noticed a vehicle had parked in the lot and was remaining there for an extended period. A man exited the vehicle and began to approach on foot. The woman tried to shut her window before the man reached the window, but he was able to rob her of the money in the cash register implying he had a firearm. The man fled the scene.
April 28
Gun threat: 6:32 p.m., officers were dispatched to a threat with a weapon at the Thea Bowman Apartments, 23920 32nd Ave. S. The victim had been playing catch in the parking lot and his ball got away from him ending up underneath a man’s vehicle. The man became angry and eventually went to his vehicle, obtained a firearm, and pointed it at the victim. The man went into his apartment after realizing the police had been called. The man was contacted and denied using a firearm during the incident. A search warrant was obtained by officers and they removed a .22 handgun from the man’s vehicle. The man was taken into custody without incident.
Dollar Tree robbery: 9:16 p.m., officers responded to a robbery at the Dollar Tree, 20618 108th Ave. SE. The employees were closing the store and thought no customers were left inside. As one of the employees was walking towards the cash vault room, he was contacted by a man who ordered the employee and others to put their hands up. During the robbery, the man showed the employees a handgun that he had in his possession. The man ended up taking all the money from the cash registers which totaled close to $2,500.
April 29
Bigfoot Java robbery (again): 2:53 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Bigfoot Java, 21116 84th Ave. S., regarding a robbery. An employee was working alone when the suspect approached and pushed open her window. The suspect appeared to be armed with a firearm and demanded all money on hand. The employee removed between $100-$200 from the cash register and handed it to the suspect. The suspect was seen running to a nearby vehicle getting into the passenger seat.
Shooting: 4:10 p.m., officers responded to the Dollar Tree, 23406 Pacific Highway S. A man and his girlfriend followed another male to Kent who told them he knew where they could purchase narcotics. When they arrived at the Dollar Tree, the victim and his girlfriend began contacting occupied vehicles until his girlfriend was able to purchase methamphetamine from the unknown suspects. When the victim found out that he and girlfriend had no more money to buy a lighter to consume their drugs and that the suspects did not give them the desired amount commonly associated with the money spent; the victim went back to the suspects to try to get some of their money back. During the argument, one of the suspects shot the victim in the leg and they left in a vehicle. The victim was transported to a hospital for further treatment.
May 1
Carjacking: 6:05 a.m., officers were dispatched to a carjacking near the intersection of Russell Road and West Meeker Street. A man had been at the 76-gas station at 1513 W Meeker cleaning his vehicle when one of the suspects approached him asking for a ride and to jump start his vehicle down the street. The man agreed which led them to Russell and Meeker Street. Once on scene, the man was robbed of his vehicle by the suspect and another subject. The victim’s vehicle was later recovered at the Driftwood Apartments, 1610 W. James Place.
Driver rams officer’s SUV: 9:10 a.m., officers located a recently stolen vehicle in the area of SE 208th Street and 124th Avenue SE. The vehicle intentionally drove towards the patrol vehicle. The officer activated his emergency lights to signal the driver to stop and left an area for the suspect to flee. The suspect vehicle instead turned directly into the officer’s vehicle hitting the left front area causing damage, continued past the patrol vehicle, drove onto the sidewalk striking a parked vehicle, and then took off at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was eventually abandoned in the 11700 block of SE 211th St. after crashing into a homeowner’s fence. A K-9 search was executed but were unable to locate the suspect driver. Officers located a loaded sawed-off shotgun inside the stolen vehicle.
May 4
Robbery: 9:24 p.m., officers were dispatched to a robbery at the Townplace Suites, 18123 72nd Ave. S. The victim was backing out of her parking stall and accidentally hit an occupied vehicle in the parking lot. When the victim got out to apologize and contact the occupants, the driver of the other vehicle pulled out a firearm, pointed it at the victim and stated something to the effect of, “You shouldn’t have hit my car bitch.” The suspect stole the victim’s wallet and fled the scene in his vehicle.
May 7
Carjacking: 5:02 p.m., officers were dispatched to a carjacking that occurred hours prior at the Alvista 240 Apartments, 24028 110th Pl. SE. The victim had been at the Phoenix Court Apartments, 23913 111th Pl. SE, when the suspect asked for a ride to the Alvista Apartments. Once they arrived, another vehicle pulled up and all who were involved stole the victim’s vehicle.
May 9
Arrest on many violations: 4:01 a.m., officers were dispatched to Country Glen Apartments, 27400 132nd Ave. SE, for an order violation. The reporting party stated her mother was being kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend. The male fled the scene in a vehicle at a high rate of speed. Officers were trying to catch up to him until he blew the red light. Officers located the suspect vehicle crashed in the 10500 block of Kent Kangley Road. The suspect continued to flee on foot. He ran to the fence that runs behind Staples, where he made the choice to attempt to jump the fence. This is approximately a 12 to 15 foot drop to the pavement below. After crashing to the pavement below he was quickly taken into custody by arriving officers. The suspect was charged with an order violation, reckless endangerment, failure to yield, obstruction, malicious mischief, as well as hit-and-run.
