An 80-year-old Kent man died after being struck by a vehicle while trying to walk across Southeast Kent Kangley Road at about 6 a.m. Monday near Lake Meridian.
The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as Ivan Nesteruk, age 80 and the cause of death as an accident. Police reports had initially listed the man’s age as 79.
The accident occurred in the 14300 block Southeast Kent Kangley Road, a busy five-lane roadway. Nesteruk stepped into the path of a westbound vehicle driven by a 63-year-old Kent man, according to a Kent Police media release.
“At this time it appears that the pedestrian simply chose to cross this busy roadway while less than a block from a marked crosswalk and traffic signals,” said Assistant Police Chief Pat Lowery.
Nesteruk, dressed in dark-colored clothing, attempted to the cross the street from a south-side sidewalk to the north side of the road. Police, firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene but were unable to revive the man. The driver was shaken but uninjured.
Police investigators interviewed morning commuters who witnessed the incident. There is no evidence that speed played any factor in the accident.
