A Kent Police officer chased and tackled a man who had run from a residence after reportedly spraying a fire extinguisher during a dispute inside the home.

A Kent Police officer chased and tackled a man who had run from a residence after reportedly spraying a fire extinguisher during a dispute inside the home.

Officers arrested the man for investigation of malicious mischief at about 10:09 p.m. on Sept. 18 near the Kent Armory, 24410 Military Road S., according to the police report.

Police responded to the residence in the 3800 block of South 249th Street, the fourth call from the home’s landlord that day. A police mobile crisis team responded to the first call at about 12:15 p.m. but determined the man didn’t meet the criteria for involuntary commitment. The landlord had called to report the man is bipolar and hadn’t taken his medication. The landlord rents three bedrooms and the man had lived at the home since May.

The landlord called again at 3:45 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. because she didn’t feel safe with the man there. Police told her they couldn’t do anything unless the man presented a danger to himself or to others.

With the landlord’s final call of the night, she reported the man had pushed another man at the home. Officers responded and knocked on the man’s bedroom door but he didn’t answer. A short while later, the man opened the door and sprayed a fire extinguisher inside the home before running out the front door still carrying the extinguisher.

Officers chased the man, yelled at him to stop, and fired a Taser at him but the dart didn’t faze him. The man threw away the fire extinguisher and refused commands from police to stop before an officer caught up to him and tackled him.

Back at the man’s room, police found several knives as well as a key to a safe where the man had a 9 mm handgun. Officers took the gun and knives for safekeeping.

Man tries to steal bicycle

Officers arrested a man for investigation of attempted theft and malicious mischief after he allegedly tried to steal a bicycle locked up near Panera Bread at the Kent Station shopping center.

An officer in a patrol vehicle saw the man running from Panera at about 10:02 p.m. on Sept. 19 near Fourth Avenue North, according to the police report. The man kept looking back behind him. The officer then saw a security guard looking for the man.

Officers spotted the man nearby in the 500 block of Second Place North. The security guard told officers the man had tried to cut off a lock and steal the bicycle that a store employee had locked up.

The man initially denied trying to take the bicycle and said he stopped to go to the bathroom on the side of the building but ran when he saw a security officer. When police found a wire cutter in the bushes near where they stopped the man, officers showed the device to him. He then admitted he had tried to steal the bicycle.

Man flees after car crash

Police cited a man for hit-and-run property damage after he reportedly rear ended another vehicle and then drove off at about 6:31 a.m. on Sept. 16 in the 25600 block of 104th Avenue Southeast.

Officers were able to track down the man because the front license plate of his vehicle fell off during the collision, according to the police report. The man whose car was hit saw the plate in the road and gave it to officers.

Police went to the apartment complex in the 25800 block of 110th Avenue Southeast where the vehicle was registered and saw a car that matched the description . The car had a damaged front bumper.

A roommate let police into the apartment where they found the man asleep on a bedroom floor. Officers said the man was under the influence of alcohol and unable to stand up. He denied drinking and said the other driver didn’t brake so it was that driver’s fault he smashed into his car as the driver tried to make a left turn.

Man punches man at bus stop

Officers arrested a man for investigation of fourth-degree assault after he allegedly punched a man waiting for a bus at about 1:13 a.m. on Sept. 17 in the 400 block of First Avenue North near Kent Station.

A man called 911 to report a man punched him in the head as he waited for a bus, according to the police report.

The man said another man walked up to him at the bus stop and asked him if he wanted to fight. He said the man then punched him and left the scene. Officers found the man at the nearby Chevron station, 631 Central Ave. N., and took him into custody.

Officers had trouble getting the man to respond to their commands. He told the officers, “I can’t hear you, I’m deaf.”
