A Kent Police officer fired five shots that struck the windshield of a stolen vehicle driven by a man who reportedly rammed the officer’s police SUV.
A 31-year-old Seattle man suffered minor injuries during the May 10 incident in the parking lot of the Homestead Apartments, 20621 108th Ave. SE, in the Panther Lake area. Officers were trying to arrest the man during a stolen vehicle investigation.
“The subject’s medical records release is still pending, so while we know they were minor, the type of injuries sustained are unknown at this time,” according to a June 4 update to the police shooting by the Valley Independent Investigative Team.
The team is a multi-agency group of investigators from seven South King County police departments (Auburn, Des Moines, Federal Way, Kent, Renton, Port of Seattle and Tukwila). The Kent Police Department is excluded from this investigation because they were the involved agency.
Police arrested the man for investigation of possession of a stolen vehicle and assault, according to the report. Paramedics transported the man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
“The subject was released from custody following his hospital stay while the investigation was conducted and until it is referred to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office,” according to the report.
Three other officers also were on the scene when the shooting occurred. No officers were injured. The officer who fired his gun is 45 years old and has been with the Kent Police Department for 11 years. He was placed on administrative leave after the shooting.
The Valley Independent Investigative Team will release weekly updates until it completes the investigation.
