Residents can sign up now for the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training sponsored by the city of Kent Emergency Management department.
The training helps prepare residents to help themselves and others following an earthquake, flood or an act of terror.
Depending on the severity of the disaster, emergency workers may not be able to reach those in need. Self-reliance through CERT training greatly increases the chances that individuals, families, and businesses will come through a disaster safely.
Several of the topics covered in CERT include medical triage and treatment, disaster psychology, light search and rescue operations, fire suppression and disaster preparedness.
Classes are held on Thursdays for eight weeks, starting Sept. 17, at local fires stations. Space is available for both the afternoon class (1-4 p.m.) and the evening class (6-9:30 p.m.).
