The Kent-Meridian High School student struck by a car on Wednesday as he walked in a crosswalk at the school parking lot has been upgraded to serious from critical condition.

The boy, 16, remained in intensive care with a head injury at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle on Friday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Kent Police arrested a 22-year-old Kent man for investigation of vehicular assault right after the incident at 10020 S.E. 256th St. The driver reportedly entered the school parking lot at an estimated speed of 30 to 40 mph, according to court documents.

The man told police he accelerated through a yellow traffic signal because he didn’t want to stop for a red light. He said his car might have become airborne on a small hill in the school driveway and he lost control of the vehicle.

The man, a student at Highline College in Des Moines, has not yet been charged in the case as police continue to investigate before turning the case over to the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Police transported the man to the King County jail on Wednesday. He was released on Thursday on $5,000 bail, according to jail records.
