A 23-year-old Kent man was killed on Saturday, Sept. 25 in a shooting in the College Hill area of Pullman near the Washington State University campus.

Liban A. Barre, died in the shooting, according to the Pullman Police Department. Brandon Gray, 22, a WSU student and football player, was injured in the shooting and remained in serious but stable condition, according to police.

Pullman Police arrested a 23-year-old Pullman man for investigation of second-degree assault in the shooting as detectives continue to try to determine what led to the shooting. Police did not release any possible motive for the shooting.

Officers responded at about 12:30 a.m. to the 1200 block of NE Myrtle Street for a report of a loud party with possibly 200 people in attendance, according to police. As officers were approaching the scene, they reported hearing multiple gunshots.

Near the area of Williams Drive and Lybecker Road, they found two men who had multiple gunshot wounds. Officers began immediate life-saving measures on both individuals before Pullman Fire transported the two men to Pullman Regional Hospital. Barre died at the hospital and Gary was transported by Life Flight to a Spokane hospital.

Barre moved to Pullman just a few weeks ago, according to The Spokesman-Review newspaper in Spokane. He planned to enroll at WSU and become a politician.

Between 2010 and 2021, Pullman had just one homicide, according to Pullman Police Department’s annual report and The Spokesman-Review.
