Kent Kindergarten teacher is recognized by student

There’s a reason why students keep coming back to visit Kit Bennett in her kindergarten classroom well after they’ve graduated from Kent View Elementary School.

“Mrs. Bennett is an awesome teacher who loves her children greatly and fosters incredible growth and learning,” said John Hoyt, parent. “My son is currently in Mrs. Bennett’s class and a few years back my daughter was in her class as well. The entire staff at this school and adjoining preschool is remarkably loving and our two children show remarkable growth each day and physically each quarter with their report card.”

Kindergartener Brie Bojorquez says it’s because Bennett is a “caring and loving teacher.” And that’s why Bojorquez nominated Bennett to be STAR 101.5’s Teacher of the Week.

Bennett was the radio show’s Teacher of the Week from Nov. 14-18. The award from STAR 101.5 allows students to recognize local, deserving educators for their commitment to the quality education of children.

Representatives from STAR 101.5 and Komo 4 made a surprise visit to the classroom that week to deliver prizes to Bennett and her students.

Each student received a goody bag full of prizes from Applebee’s, Washington State Employees Credit Union, Dairy Farmers of Washington, KOMO 4, Communities at KOMOnews.com and STAR 101.5.

“The kids were so excited for their teacher and it was a great day for them too because they got goodies and had the chance to meet the Dairy Princess, which is a big deal for them,” said Tess Johnson, principal.

Bennett received a personalized plaque from Issaquah Trophy and Awards, a $100 check from Washington State Employees Credit Union and a $100 Applebee’s gift certificate. She got to choose between getting a makeover or a Kindle courtesy of Blanc N’ Schwartz Salon.

“She is absolutely deserving of this award,” Johnson said. “She’s been a teacher here for a number of years and has always stayed positive, enthusiastic and hard-working. All her kindergarteners are reading by Thanksgiving time, which is quite remarkable.”
